Preparing for the Registered Behavior Technician exam is hard to do well when you are also juggling coursework, supervision hours and real client sessions. Practice smarter instead of longer. Every question on this site is written from the official BACB RBT Test Content Outline (3rd edition), the same blueprint Pearson VUE uses to build the live exam. No login. No credit card. No questions recycled from the retired 2nd edition task list.
Choose an RBT Practice Exam for Your Stage of Preparation
Pick the format that matches where you are right now. Everything below is free, aligned to the current BACB outline, and built to mirror the Pearson VUE testing experience.
Why Candidates Fail the RBT Exam, and How to Avoid It
According to the BACB Annual Data Report, 75% of first-time candidates passed the RBT exam. Among candidates retaking it, 38% passed. In raw numbers, 109,341 people tested for the first time that year and 54,674 tested again.
Read those two numbers together and the lesson is uncomfortable. Your odds are best on attempt one, and they drop by roughly half afterward. The usual reason is not lack of knowledge. It is passive studying: rereading notes, watching videos, memorizing definitions, and never once answering an applied scenario question under a clock.
That is the problem this site was built to solve. Every question presents a clinical situation and asks what an RBT should do next, because that is how the real exam is written.
What Is the RBT Practice Test?
The RBT practice exam is a free online RBT mock exam for candidates preparing for the Registered Behavior Technician certification exam, which is administered by the Behavior Analyst Certification Board (BACB) and delivered by Pearson VUE.
Every question here is mapped to the RBT Mock Test Content Outline (3rd edition), the official framework of 43 tasks across six content areas that all RBT mock exams have followed since January 1, 2026. These are not recycled items from the retired 2nd edition task list, which used different domain names and a different question distribution.
This platform is built for:
- Behavior technician trainees working through their 40-hour training
- Psychology students and recent graduates moving into applied behavior analysis
- Career changers entering ABA who need structured exam preparation
- Candidates who did not pass and need a targeted retake plan
- Supervising BCBAs looking for free preparation tools to share with their teams

A Note on the “80% Passing Score” Myth
You will see the figure 80% quoted across the internet as the RBT practice exam passing score. It is not official. The BACB sets the cut score through the modified Angoff method, a criterion-referenced process in which a panel of certified subject matter experts judges item difficulty and the Board of Directors approves the resulting standard. A new passing score is established whenever something significant changes, such as a new test content outline. Results are reported only as pass or fail.
So treat 80% as a readiness benchmark for your practice scores, not as the real cut score. Scoring consistently in the mid-80s on realistic timed practice is the most useful signal you have.
What the RBT Exam Covers: The Six Content Areas
The 3rd edition outline distributes 75 scored questions across six areas. Behavior Acquisition is the heaviest at 25%, so teaching procedures deserve your largest block of study time. All questions carry equal weight, and your result reflects overall performance rather than performance in each area.
| Content area | Scored questions | Share of exam |
| A. Data Collection and Graphing | 13 | 17% |
| B. Behavior Assessment | 8 | 11% |
| C. Behavior Acquisition | 19 | 25% |
| D. Behavior Reduction | 14 | 19% |
| E. Documentation and Reporting | 10 | 13% |
| F. Ethics | 11 | 15% |
A. Data Collection and Graphing: 13 Scored Questions
Data collection is the foundation of applied behavior analysis, and the exam expects you to do more than name a measurement type. Questions typically hand you a session scenario and ask which procedure fits, or give you raw numbers and ask you to calculate a result.
Key Concepts
Continuous and discontinuous measurement, frequency and rate, duration, latency, interresponse time, percent correct, permanent product recording, entering data and updating graphs, describing behavior in observable and measurable terms, summarizing trends, and threats to data fidelity.
Common Mistake
Confusing event recording with interval recording. Know when each one is appropriate.

B. Behavior Assessment: 8 Scored Questions
Assessment questions test your supporting role. RBTs assist with assessment under a supervising behavior analyst and never design or modify assessments independently.
Key Concepts
Multiple stimulus without replacement preference assessments, paired stimulus assessments, free operant preference assessments, assisting with assessments of skill strengths and deficits, and the components of functional assessment procedures including ABC data collection.
Common Mistake
Assuming a preferred item automatically works as a reinforcer. Preference and reinforcer effectiveness are related but not the same thing.

C. Behavior Acquisition: 19 Scored Questions
This is the largest area on the exam. In the 3rd edition, it was renamed from Skill Acquisition and reduced from 24 scored questions to 19, but it still carries the most weight of any single area.
Key Concepts
reinforcement procedures, discrete trial teaching, naturalistic teaching, prompting hierarchies and prompt fading, forward chaining, backward chaining, total task chaining, shaping, discrimination training, stimulus control transfer, token economies, generalization, and maintenance.
Common Mistake
Mixing up forward and backward chaining. Know which step the learner performs independently first in each.

D. Behavior Reduction: 14 Scored Questions
Behavior reduction rose from 12 to 14 scored questions in the 3rd edition. These items test whether you can implement a behavior intervention plan consistently and ethically, and whether you understand why each procedure works.
Key Concepts
Extinction and extinction bursts, spontaneous recovery, differential reinforcement of alternative behavior, differential reinforcement of incompatible behavior, differential reinforcement of other behavior, differential reinforcement of low rates, noncontingent reinforcement, antecedent modification, and crisis and emergency procedures.
Common Mistake
Not expecting an extinction burst. The exam regularly checks whether you know behavior often increases before it decreases.

E. Documentation and Reporting: 10 Scored Questions
Documentation held steady at 10 scored questions. The standard the exam applies is strict: session notes must be objective, observable, and measurable, with no interpretation mixed in.
Key Concepts
Writing objective session notes, separating observation from interpretation, data integrity, reporting variables that may affect a client’s progress such as illness or medication changes, incident reporting, communicating with your supervision team, and applicable legal and workplace documentation requirements.
Common Mistake
Writing that a client “was frustrated” instead of describing what actually happened, such as throwing materials and screaming for 12 seconds.

F. Ethics: 11 Scored Questions
In the 3rd edition, Professional Conduct and Scope of Practice became a dedicated Ethics area carrying 11 scored questions. These items are often the hardest, because several answers can look reasonable until you ask what the code actually requires.
Key Concepts
The RBT Ethics Code (2.0), which contains 29 standards across three sections: scope of practice and competence, supervision requirements, confidentiality and client privacy, multiple relationships, client dignity and rights, cultural responsiveness, and reporting obligations to the BACB.
Common Mistake
Acting on a caregiver suggestion without supervisor approval. Clinical direction comes from your supervising behavior analyst.

What Changed With the 3rd Edition
If you started studying before 2026, check your materials against this list. Measurement became Data Collection and Graphing. Assessment became Behavior Assessment. Skill Acquisition became Behavior Acquisition and dropped to 19 scored questions. Professional Conduct and Scope of Practice became Ethics. The BACB also issued a new curriculum outline that all 40-hour trainings must follow for applications submitted on or after January 1, 2026.
The practical consequence matters more than the naming. A question bank built on the old blueprint overtrains you on teaching procedures and undertrains you on data collection, graphing, and ethics, which now account for 32 scored questions between them. If you are already certified, none of this affects you while you maintain your certification.
How to Pass the RBT Exam on Your First Try: A Five-Step Plan
The gap between a first attempt pass and a retake is usually method, not effort. Retrieval practice, meaning pulling information out of memory under pressure, produces far better exam results than rereading material you have already seen.
Step 1: Take a diagnostic test before you study anything
Sit a practice exam cold, with no review, and nothing looked up. Your score breakdown across the six content areas becomes your study map. Skip this, and you risk spending most of your time on material you already know.
Step 2: Work your two weakest areas, then quiz immediately
Read the relevant section of the RBT study guide, then take that area’s quiz right away. Repeat the study and test loop until you score 80% on that area before moving on.
Step 3: Complete a timed 75-question exam without pausing
Set the clock, close everything else, and finish in one sitting. Review every incorrect answer. Pay closest attention to items you missed on topics you thought you knew, because those reveal gaps in applied reasoning rather than vocabulary.
Step 4: Use flashcards daily
Ten to fifteen minutes on the pairs that blur under pressure: latency versus interresponse time, DRA versus DRI, forward versus backward chaining, extinction versus extinction burst.
Step 5: Run a full simulation three to five days before your appointment
Ninety minutes, no breaks, no notes, no phone. If you score below 80%, spend the final days on your weakest areas. If you score above it, rest and review lightly rather than cramming.
What Exam Day Actually Looks Like
Plan to arrive about 30 minutes early. Check-in includes verification of one current, government-issued photo ID with your signature, agreement to the testing center rules, a palm vein scan, and a digital photograph. The name on your ID must match your BACB portal account exactly, or you will not be admitted.
Nothing goes into the testing room except your ID and locker key. No phone, no watch, no notes, no calculator, no scratch paper. The testing center provides a dry-erase board, and earplugs are available on request. Arrive more than 30 minutes late, you are turned away and your fee forfeited. You may take unscheduled breaks, but the clock keeps running, and you cannot leave the building.
Two scheduling details save money. Rescheduling 31 or more days before your appointment is free. Between 30 and 5 days it costs $27, and between 5 days and 48 hours it costs $32. Within 48 hours you cannot reschedule at all.
All Exams You Need in One Place
Passing the RBT exam requires more than memorizing terms. You need to understand how to apply ABA principles in real client scenarios the kind of judgment-based thinking the exam tests.

After You Pass: Your Certification Starts Inactive
Passing the exam does not make you eligible to practice. Your RBT certification status begins as inactive, and it becomes active only when your RBT Supervisor or RBT Requirements Coordinator adds you as a supervisee in their own BACB portal account. Until that happens, you cannot practice, bill, or represent yourself as an RBT.
Maintenance changed in 2026 as well. After certifying or recertifying that year, RBTs move to a two year recertification cycle and must earn 12 professional development units per cycle, replacing the annual competency assessment model. The two-year recertification processing fee is $50. Ongoing supervision requirements continue: a minimum of 5% of the hours you spend delivering services each calendar month, with at least two real-time contacts per month and at least one observation of you working with a client.

Why the RBT Credential Is Worth the Effort
The RBT credential is widely recognized across ABA service settings, and the field keeps growing. The BACB reported 246,109 certified RBTs at the end of 2025, up from 196,579 at the end of 2024.
Certified RBTs work in school districts, in-home ABA programs, autism treatment clinics, early intervention services, and telehealth settings. Many employers now prefer or require the credential for entry-level behavior technician roles. Pay varies considerably by state, employer type, and experience, so check current listings in your area rather than relying on a national average.
The credential is also a natural first step toward BCaBA or BCBA certification. Clinical experience gained as an RBT under supervision builds directly toward the supervised fieldwork those credentials require.
Frequently Asked Questions

The RBT practice test is a free online mock exam for anyone preparing for the Registered Behavior Technician certification exam. It is built for behavior technician trainees, psychology students, career changers entering ABA, and candidates preparing for a retake. Every question is aligned to the BACB RBT Test Content Outline (3rd edition).
How many questions are on the RBT exam in 2026?
The RBT exam contains 85 multiple choice questions: 75 scored and 10 unscored pilot questions used for future test development. Candidates have 90 minutes. The pilot questions are distributed throughout and cannot be identified, so every question deserves equal effort.
What is the passing score for the RBT exam?
The BACB does not publish a passing percentage. The cut score is set using the modified Angoff method by a panel of certified subject matter experts and approved by the Board of Directors, and results are reported only as pass or fail. Use 80% on timed practice exams as a readiness benchmark rather than treating it as the official standard.
What is the RBT exam pass rate?
According to the BACB Annual Data Report, 75% of first-time candidates passed the RBT exam. Among candidates retaking it, 38% passed. In raw numbers, 109,341 people tested for the first time that year and 54,674 tested again.
How much does the RBT exam cost?
The certification application costs $65, paid to the BACB, and each exam appointment costs $45, paid to Pearson VUE. That is $110 for a first attempt, plus $45 for every retake appointment.
Can I take the RBT exam online from home?
No. The RBT exam is delivered in person only, at authorized Pearson VUE testing centers and qualifying US military bases. Remote proctoring is not offered for this examination.
How do I register for the official RBT exam?
Submit an RBT certification application through your BACB portal account with your attestation form, 40 hour training certificate and completed Initial Competency Assessment, and pay the $65 fee. Allow about two weeks for processing. Once approved, you receive scheduling instructions and book your appointment with Pearson VUE, which collects $45. You have one year from approval to sit the exam.
How long should I study for the RBT exam?
Most candidates study for two to six weeks after completing their 40 hour training. Those with existing clinical experience often need two to three weeks, while candidates new to applied behavior analysis usually benefit from four to six weeks of structured study combining the study guide, targeted quizzes and full length timed exams.
What should I do if I fail the RBT exam?
You may retake the exam up to 8 times within the 12 month period following your initial application approval, with a mandatory 7 day wait between attempts. A retake application appears in your BACB portal account within 48 hours of a failed attempt. The BACB does not currently charge a retake application fee, but Pearson VUE collects its $45 appointment fee each time.
How often do RBTs recertify now?
RBTs who certify or recertify in 2026 move to a two year recertification cycle and must earn 12 professional development units per cycle. The two year recertification processing fee is $50, and a $50 late fee applies during the reinstatement period.
