RBT Behavior Skill Acquisition Quiz
Skill acquisition, also called behavior acquisition, is the single heaviest domain on the RBT certification exam, accounting for 19 scored questions (25%) under Domain C of the RBT Test Content Outline (3rd edition). This is where the exam tests whether you can actually teach, not just define procedures, but select and implement the right teaching strategy for each learner and situation. This RBT Behavior Skill Acquisition Quiz contains 25 scenario-based questions that mirror the applied style of the real exam, with detailed explanations designed to sharpen the clinical decision-making that determines pass or fail.Discrete Trial Training (DTT) is the most structured teaching procedure you will encounter. The exam tests your knowledge of the discrete trial sequence: discriminative stimulus (instruction), prompt (if needed), response, consequence (reinforcement or correction), and intertrial interval. You must understand prompting hierarchies, including least-to-most (starting with the minimal prompt and increasing assistance only as needed) and most-to-least (starting with maximum support and fading systematically). Questions often present a teaching scenario and ask which prompting procedure is being used, or what the instructor should do next when a learner makes an error. Error correction procedures, such as representing the instruction, providing the correct prompt, and reinforcing, appear frequently.Natural Environment Teaching (NET) represents the opposite end of the structure spectrum. Here, teaching occurs during play and daily routines, following the learner’s motivation rather than a predetermined trial sequence. The exam tests whether you can distinguish NET from DTT in vignettes: if the instructor is capitalizing on a child reaching for a toy to teach requesting, that is NET. Incidental teaching, a specific NET procedure, involves arranging the environment to create learning opportunities, waiting for the learner to initiate, and then prompting an elaborated response.Chaining and shaping are essential for teaching multi-step and novel behaviors. Forward chaining teaches the first step first, backward chaining teaches the last step first (useful because the learner contacts reinforcement sooner), and total task chaining practices all steps each trial. Shaping reinforces successive approximations toward the target behavior, for example, reinforcing any vocalization, then word-like sounds, then actual words. The exam loves to test the distinction between these: if a question describes reinforcing closer and closer approximations to a target, the answer is shaping, not chaining.Verbal operants, mand, tact, echoic, and intraverbal, are tested through functional scenarios rather than definitions. A mand is a request controlled by motivation (saying water when thirsty). A tact is a label controlled by a nonverbal stimulus (saying dog when seeing one). An echoic is repeating what was heard, and an intraverbal is answering questions or filling in blanks. The exam presents everyday interactions and asks you to classify the verbal operant, so practice identifying the controlling variable, not just memorizing the terms.Work through all 25 questions under realistic conditions, then study every explanation. The rationales reveal the single distinguishing feature between commonly confused procedures, such as the difference between most-to-least and least-to-most prompting, which is precisely where exam points are won and lost.

Skill Acquisition
What is Skill Acquisition in ABA?
Skill acquisition refers to the process of teaching new behaviors to clients using ABA principles. RBTs implement behavior intervention plans designed by BCBAs to help individuals with autism or developmental disabilities develop important life, communication, and social skills.
Skill acquisition programs often include:
- Discrete Trial Training (DTT)
- Natural Environment Teaching (NET)
- Chaining and shaping techniques
- Task analysis for complex skills
Topics Covered in the RBT Skill Acquisition Quiz
A comprehensive RBT Behavior Skill Acquisition Quiz should cover the following areas:
- Discrete Trial Training (DTT)
- Breaking down skills into trials
- Prompting and fading procedures
- Natural Environment Teaching (NET)
- Teaching skills during everyday routines
- Using motivation and reinforcement naturally
- Chaining and Shaping
- Forward, backward, and total task chaining
- Shaping behaviors gradually toward a target
- Data Collection for Skill Acquisition
- Tracking progress using frequency, duration, and percentage correct
- Graphing and interpreting data
- Reinforcement and Prompting Strategies
- Identifying effective reinforcers
- Using least-to-most and most-to-least prompting
